Bratislava (historical German name: Pressburg) is the capital of the Slovak Republic and, with a population of about 429,000, also the country's largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia on both banks of the Danube River. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital worldwide that borders two independent countries, and it and Vienna are the two European national capitals closest to one another, at less than 60 kilometres (37 mi) apart.

Bratislava is the political, cultural, and economic centre of Slovakia. It is home to several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions.

The history of the city, long known by the German name Pressburg, has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, a part of the larger Habsburg Monarchy territories, from 1536 to 1783 and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian, and German historical figures.

Bratislava profits from its geographical location at the heart of Central Europe and excellent access to transport links:

  • The international M. R. Štefánik Airport Bratislava (BTS)with frequent regular flights from/ to many European destinations (being e.g. the Central European hub of Ryanair), is 9 just kilometres (5.6 mi) north-east of the city centre.
  • The Vienna Schwechat airport (VIE), one of the businest Central European airports (over 18 mil. passengers in 2009), is just 50 kilometres from Bratislava with regular public transport services, under one hour travel time.
  • Also the Budapest Ferihegy airport (BUD) is relatively close - just over 200 km/ two hours drive away
  • As a rail hub, the city has direct & regular connections to Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and the rest of Slovakia.
  • The motorway system provides direct access to Vienna (Austria, under one hour travel time), Budapest (Hungary, less than two hours travel time), Brno & Prague (Czech Republic, Brno 1 hour, Prague 3 hours travel time), and of course to destinations in Slovakia.

Our Bratislava open courses are held at the state of the art Gopas training centre located in Ružinov, Bratislava's largest business district. The venue is easily accessible both by public transport and car (free parking is available onsite). To residential students we can recommend e.g. the following accomodation options:

o    Chopin Airporthotel Bratislava***, a newly built highly modern facility situated roughly halfway between the Gopas training centre and the Bratislava Airport.
